Meet me at the dinner table....

I have a few confessions to make....

Please don't judge us too harshly, but up until 2 weeks ago, we NEVER ate dinner at the table as a family.
It wasn't even something we did at the beginning of our marriage. It just never happened.

Now I could sit here and give you 20 reasons, (excuses,) on why we didn't do it and I know the average family now a days is too busy to do a sit down dinner, but that's not even one of our reasons, (excuses.) We were just too LAZY, (and my husband is a tv addict!) ;)

J has been trying for years to get me to cook healthier, and heck, just cook more often! And now that our daughter eats pretty much everything we eat, (except meat, we still can't get her to eat meat,) I know that I need to consistently put together a well balanced meal.

So enter NOW...

AS I have stated, I had been dealing with some new years blues, some intense crankiness, and some temper issues; (just call ME a delight!) Our daughter was acting out horribly in the evenings, was taking 1-2 hrs to eat her dinner and I felt the evenings were turning into "a mommy and daddy have had a long day and we just want to be lazy" selfish attitude.

Well I kinda reached a breaking point awhile back and knew we needed to change some stuff. I have to keep reminding myself that bringing children into this world is not a right; they were a gift from God for us to give of ourselves and raise them here on earth. It's not about how I am feeling or what kind of mood I have been in. It's about them.

I also had the excuse that it seemed like 80% of the time, I was feeding our son at dinner time and wouldn't be able to sit at the table to eat anyway.

Well we made the decision that we were going to do our best to sit down every night and eat at the table as a family. Well we've done it!!
We only missed one night in the past 2 weeks, because we were out shopping and got fast food on the way home.
We've also found, that even if our son is screaming and due to eat, he will do ok in the highchair for a bit because we are all sitting close together with him.
And the best part of this whole thing: our daughter is suddenly eating faster!

Ummm, it's amazing what happens when we put our own selfish desires aside, and start doing what's best for our family.
Hello! Obvious light bulb!
It's even warming up to my husband a bit. He would still rather sit in his comfy recliner and watch tv or play video games, but he is starting to realize, I am a little more motivated to cook something other than tator tots, if we are sitting down enjoying it together as a FAMILY! ;)

Way to leave them hanging!

I'm still here.....

Life just got interesting this last week and I'm fighting my normal new year blues....

Does it count that I'm creating awesome blog posts in my head but just not writing them down??

Aren't I doing just awesome with all those "getting to know me" posts I was talking about??

I have been reading A LOT of convicting things lately and I'm just dealing with one of those "I feel like I am just stinking it up" moods. You know when it just seems like no matter what you do, it will just never be good enough.....
Please don't worry about me; extra prayers are welcome though!

I mean how can I be too down when I get to stare at these 2 sets of baby blues all day every day!!
{That doesn't even include their Daddy's also ;)}

yum yum

Just a quick post to tell you about a recipe I tried last night. It was an immediate hit for my husband and I!
Here is the link for it:
 Easy Baked Taco Pie

But if you want I'll write it out for you.

prep time 20 min
total time 50 min
makes 4-6 servings

What You Need
1 lb. extra-lean ground beef
1 onion, chopped
1 Tbsp. chili powder
1 can (14-1/2 oz.) diced tomatoes, un-drained
1 pkg. (10 oz.) frozen corn, thawed, drained
6 whole wheat tortillas (6 inch)
1 cup KRAFT Mexican Style 2% Milk Finely Shredded Four Cheese, divided
1/4 cup BREAKSTONE'S Reduced Fat or KNUDSEN Light Sour Cream

Make It
HEAT oven to 375ºF.
BROWN meat with onions and chili powder in large skillet on medium-high heat. Add tomatoes and corn; cook 5 min. or until heated through, stirring occasionally.
SPOON 1 cup meat mixture into 2-qt. round casserole; cover with 3 tortillas, overlapping if necessary to fit in dish. Top with 2 cups of the remaining meat mixture and 1/2 cup cheese. Cover with remaining tortillas and remaining meat mixture; cover.
BAKE 25 to 30 min. or until heated through. Top with remaining cheese; bake, uncovered, 5 min. or until melted. Cut into wedges. Serve topped with sour cream.

I tweaked it a bit. I put in a tad less corn and threw in about a cup of salsa to give it an extra kick.

Very Yummy!!

And the winner is......

Thank you, thank you!

But no really, part of being in the bloggy world is getting to meet new people, swap stories and build each other up!
Amy at nine-ninety-one recently found me awhile back and then just awarded me this:

I feel so absolutely honored, thank you Amy!

The rules are to:
1. Thank and link back to the person who gave you the award
2. Answer 10 questions
3. Pass it along to 7 blogs you've recently discovered and enjoy
4. Leave your recipients a note, telling them about them about the award.

Here are the ten questions:
1. Why did you create this blog?
Truthfully, we have some communication issues with a certain set of relatives and I was hoping since they followed other blogs, they’d follow this one to keep in touch and watch the kids grow.

2. What kind of blogs do you follow?
Ones that post pictures often, I am a picture freak. Ones that are real and make everyday happenings fun!

3. Favorite Make-Up Brand?

4. Favorite Clothing Brand?

5. Indispensable Make-Up Product?

6. Favorite Color?

10. Would you rather forget to put on mascara on one eye or forget blush on one side of your face?
Sorry, I wear neither. I hardly wear makeup as it is!

And I'm gonna break the rules slightly, but here our a few blogs who deserve this award:

1) Megan at starbucksandsippycups . Megan is also an awesome photographer, check out her work: meganedelmanphotography

2) Amy at thelillardfamily, Our husbands used to work together and she keeps it real!

And I don't mean the game.....

I am about to approach a subject that can make or break our "friendship!"

SO be forewarned, this is controversial, but I CANNOT take it anymore.

Yes, we are military, yes we get health care that we pay very little for.....that being said, you get what you pay for; but it also depends on the area you're in. Just like at our old base, there is not pediatrics available on base so we must go see a civilian pediatrician.
In Beaufort, thanks to recommendations from people we trusted we found the BEST pediatrician ever for our daughter and went to her for 2 years. In that whole time, there was MAYBE twice where we waited longer than 15 minutes to be seen and appts were made with our needs in mind and even with shots, we were in and out in no time. If we had questions and called them, someone ALWAYS called back within a half hour....

Just like there, there is no availability for Monkey to be seen on base here, so we had to pick someone off base. Here we didn't know anyone, so all we could do was go down the list, find providers that were all accepting new patients and check them out. They ALL looked and acted like free health care clinics,(if you get my drift,) so we picked one and I have been crying ever since.

Average wait time: 2-3hrs (with an appointment)

And the controversial part that has me fed up and pushed to the edge; I am a paying customer with an appointment and people who are here illegally can walk in (without an appointment,) after us and be seen before my son. I am sorry but that is WRONG! This country is screwed up and going to pot.

Say what you will about their rights; if they do things legally and correctly, then they have every right to be treated fairly! But if they come illegally and try to take advantage of the system, then I will NOT tolerate it.

I can't wait for a president/government who finally sees this huge problem and does something about it!

Please tell me I am not the only was that is concerned about this subject!

New to YOU

I hope this new year is finding you all well and for those that have new years resolutions to stick to, good luck!

I, on the other hand, have a different opinion on resolutions, (see more about that from last January.) I think you should be living the same way January 1st to December 31st, always striving to be a better you. If you are clinging to the changing of the calender for that, its gonna be a harder climb!

That being said, I will now go against my beliefs and share with you my Blogging goals for the year! lol ;)

In case you haven't noticed, the name of my blog is "The life of a military family," and except for mention of deployments or duty days, I don't really go much more into detail or touch on the subject other than that.
I have decided to start entwining more on the subject throughout the month. For those that live the civilian life, you can either choose to skip these posts or read on to learn a little more about this adventure. But since I do have several military spouses/mom's/families that read this, I figured it would be a great way to share ideas, support, struggles and learn from each other!
This blog was actually started in hopes of having better communication with some relatives of ours so that they could "see" the kids grow and stay in touch better, {sorry to say it didn't work,) but as you bloggy friends know, it has turned into soooo much more! I am discovering new blogs all the time and look forward to the point every day where I can catch up with all of you!  I hope that maybe I can be of support to some new or unseasoned military spouse who is having a tough time dealing with the military lifestyle and maybe "meet" someone who has already faced and met challenges I have yet to encounter!!

And on to my next "goal":
I am excited to start a new "series" here on MF.
The Getting to Know Me edition!
I will be turning the "big 30" near the end of February and I figured this would be a good way for my new bloggy friends to learn more about me and where I come from. I am always excited to learn more about people and see why they are the way they are. We all had a beginning that's helped shape the way we are today. In regards to this, I will also welcome any suggestions on any particular subject you are interested in. Whether it be superficial like what's my favorite color, or much deeper, like when I became a born again Christian! All are welcome, although I reserve the right to pass on some if they involve sharing personal information about my loved ones!

All in all, I am so excited about this! Like I said, blogging has become to mean so much to me, and although I have yet to put up the amount of posts that most of you do, I hope to work towards putting more time and effort into sharing myself as much I take from all of you!

PS. I hope you all help to keep me accountable! ;)
